'I like to keep designs as simple as possible and let the wood speak for itself.'

Growing up together in Silver Spring, Maryland, brothers Ted and Rob Levendosky never imagined that one day they would be business partners. Ted spent the bulk of his childhood playing sports and drawing. Rob, a confessed tinkerer, tried to rebuild every toy, bicycle, and small appliance in the house.

As different as the brothers were as kids, they always shared one major interest: woodworking. In their dad's basement workshop, Ted and Rob both used their first planes, rasps, and chisels and it was there that they both discovered the joys of power tools.

For many years, woodworking remained a hobby for them both. Older brother Ted went on to art school and studied philosophy at the New School in New York. Rob studied biology at the University of Maryland. They each had a variety of jobs-in stained glass studios and frame shops, as a carpenter, and as a research assistant at NIH.

Ted and Rob first worked together in the late 1990s, when they took over management of the seating operations for a custom home theater company in Chicago. As a team, they knew it was right. Ted had the carpentry experience and design skills and Rob had a talent for problem solving, working with new types of hardware and figuring out how to use them for special applications.

After moving back home to Maryland, the brothers worked together again at a major architectural millwork company in Baltimore. They were both impressed with the high standards and craftsmanship and, of course, the incredible tools. This was what they were meant to do. After completing many challenging projects, the brothers knew it was time to go into business for themselves.

Square Design + Fine Woodworking is the result.

Ted and Rob now live only a few miles from each other in Baltimore. Ted lives with his wife, daughter, and dog and would play tennis 24 hours a day if were possible. Rob lives with his wife, two cats, and two dogs. He is a gifted musician and has fun playing in a rock band when he's not taking care of business.
